Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Damper Repair: The Las Vegas Owner’s Guide
If your HeatShield damper has seized, warped, or stopped sealing, we stock compatible replacement damper assemblies and repair hardware on our trucks, and we install them the same visit in most Las Vegas homes. Installed damper repair or replacement on a HeatShield system in Las Vegas typically runs $275 – $520 depending on the part and whether the surrounding frame needs work. Most homeowners discover the problem when smoke rolls back into the living room, or when they notice a constant cold draft from the fireplace even with the damper closed.
You’ll usually see it before you feel it on a mild day. The damper plate (the metal door that opens and closes the flue opening) either won’t move at all, or it moves but doesn’t seat flush. In Las Vegas, where we swing from 105° summers to near-freezing winter nights, a failed damper seal means your HVAC money is literally going up the chimney. That’s the call we get most often from Summerlin to Henderson.
Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield is best known for their Cerfractory flue repair compound, but the brand also manufactures top-sealing dampers and replacement damper plates used on both masonry fireplaces and prefab units. The damper assemblies come in a range of throat sizes, most commonly 24″ to 42″ wide by 8″ to 12″ deep, and matching the wrong size is the single most common mistake we see on homeowner installs. A damper that’s even 1/2″ off on the throat flange will either bind when opened or leave gaps when closed, which defeats the entire point.
The easiest way to identify yours is to look for the part number stamped on the underside of the damper plate or on the frame rail inside the firebox. If the stamp is worn off (common on older units), we measure the throat opening at three points and order to the tightest dimension. For HeatShield specifically, we recommend OEM or direct-fit equivalents rather than universal aftermarket plates if the fireplace sees regular use. Universal kits work in a pinch, but the cable routing and mounting tabs on HeatShield-compatible frames are specific enough that a generic plate often needs field modification. We stock the most common Las Vegas sizes on our trucks and can have less common dimensions in hand within two business days.
One note on independence: Hadley Chimney Las Vegas is not affiliated with HeatShield. We install and repair their damper systems because our techs know the product line well and the parts hold up in the desert climate, not because of any brand partnership.

Signs Your HeatShield Damper Repair Is Failing
- Smoke spillback when you start a fire. The number-one first symptom. If the damper plate won’t fully open or the linkage is binding, smoke has nowhere to go but into the room. Cause: cable kink, warped plate, or debris caught in the throat frame.
- A cold draft you can feel with the damper closed. Run your hand near the firebox opening on a cool evening. If you feel air moving downward, the plate isn’t sealing against the frame. Cause: warped plate, worn gasket material, or the damper plate shifted off its seat over years of thermal cycling.
- The damper handle or cable moves but nothing happens above. This is the classic broken linkage. The cable detaches from the damper plate at a crimped connector and the handle spins freely. Cause: metal fatigue at the connection point, which is the first component to fail on most HeatShield dampers we open up in Las Vegas.
- A metallic rattle from the flue when it’s windy. Desert gusts do this. A damper plate with worn pivot pins or a loose frame mounting will chatter in wind. Cause: pivot hardware wear plus the expansion and contraction of metal as Las Vegas temperatures swing 30+ degrees in a single day.
- Rust stains or scale around the damper frame. Chimney moisture plus heat equals rust, and rust locks dampers in place. Cause: a failing chimney cap allowing rain into the flue, or condensation from burning unseasoned wood. The damper takes the damage first because it sits right at the moisture line.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Las Vegas, an installed HeatShield damper repair on a masonry fireplace typically runs $275 – $390 when it’s a linkage or hardware repair. A full damper plate replacement runs $320 – $520, with the variance driven by throat size and whether the existing frame can be reused or needs to be re-anchored. Prefab fireplace dampers land at the higher end of that range because the mounting clearances are tighter and we’re often working around the unit’s existing air channels.
Every estimate includes the part, the labor to remove the old assembly, any frame cleanup or re-seating, and a function test with the damper opened and closed through its full range. You’ll get a written price before anyone touches a tool, and a photo of the failed part before we replace it. The repair itself is backed by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the damper fails within a year, we make the second visit free and the repair right, in writing.
Here’s where Las Vegas specifically moves the needle. The dry desert air is hard on all rubber and composite gasket materials, so we see more seal failures here than you’d get in a humid climate. The metal-to-metal surfaces on a HeatShield damper actually do well in the dry air, but the gasketing and pivot washers are the weak points. We account for that in what we stock: extra gasket kits and pivot hardware on the truck for the common throat sizes, so the job usually finishes in one trip.
| Repair Type | Installed Price Range (Las Vegas) | Typical Shop Time |
|---|---|---|
| Linkage / cable / handle repair | $275 – $390 | 1 – 1.5 hours |
| Damper plate replacement (masonry) | $320 – $480 | 1.5 – 2 hours |
| Damper plate replacement (prefab) | $390 – $520 | 2 – 2.5 hours |
DIY or Call Us?
There’s not much safe DIY work to be done on a HeatShield damper once it’s failed. The components sit inside the firebox throat and the flue is a confined space. If you’re trying to fix it from inside the firebox, you’re working above your own head with a metal plate that can swing down under gravity if the linkage lets go. From the top, you’re on a Las Vegas roof that gets hot enough in the summer to soften the soles of some work boots. Cory Mitchell puts it this way: “I’d rather show you the photo and explain it straight than leave you guessing what’s going on up there.”
What you can do yourself is a quick diagnostic. Shine a flashlight up into the firebox throat. Look at the damper plate: is it rusted, visibly warped, or sitting at an angle? Try the handle or cable gently. If it moves freely with no response above, that’s a broken linkage, and we can tell you over the phone whether it’s a $300 repair before we ever schedule the truck. If the plate doesn’t move at all, don’t force it – you’ll snap the cable and turn a repair into a replacement. Call (725) 600-0308 and we’ll walk through what you’re seeing.
FAQs
The damper plate itself is a 20-30 year part in the desert climate, but the gasket material, pivot pins, and cable linkage typically need service every 8-12 years on a fireplace that’s used regularly. The heat and low humidity in Las Vegas dry out composite seals faster than you’d see in most markets, so the metal outlasts the soft parts. Call (725) 600-0308 if your damper is over a decade old and you’re noticing drafts.
Yes, in most cases. Linkage failures, worn pivot hardware, and gasket seal replacements are repair jobs, not full replacements. We only recommend replacing the damper plate itself when the metal is warped, cracked, or rusted through. The honest answer comes with a photo: we show you the exact part before recommending anything.
Most HeatShield damper repairs and replacements take 1-2 hours on site. If your throat size is one we stock on the truck, which covers the majority of Las Vegas fireplaces built in the last 30 years, the job is done in a single visit. Less common sizes may need a 2-business-day part order.
We stock the common throat sizes and repair hardware on our trucks, and we source HeatShield-specific parts, plus DuraFlex and Gelco components, through our normal supply channels. If you need a part we don’t physically have on the truck that day, we’ll have it in hand within two business days and coordinate the install around your schedule.
The immediate annoyances are smoke spillback when you light a fire and higher energy bills from a permanent updraft, but there’s more at stake. A damper that stays partially open lets moisture into the flue when it rains, accelerates creosote buildup in a wood-burning chimney, and gives desert rodents a route down into the firebox. In Las Vegas, the HVAC cost alone usually pays for the repair within a season or two. Call (725) 600-0308 for a free estimate and we’ll give you the real number for your fireplace.
