Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Copperfield Crown Repair: The Las Vegas Owner’s Guide

A Copperfield chimney crown repair in Las Vegas typically runs $450 – $950 installed, depending on the crown’s condition and whether we’re patching, resurfacing, or rebuilding it entirely. We stock Copperfield-compatible crown materials on our trucks, and most crown jobs are completed in a single visit.

Most homeowners discover their crown has failed the same way: they spot a water stain on the ceiling near the fireplace, or they notice crumbling mortar on top of the chimney during a routine gutter cleaning. The crown is the concrete slab that caps the top of your chimney, and its only job is to shed water away from the flue. When it cracks, water gets in, and Las Vegas makes that worse than most places realize. Our freeze-thaw cycles aren’t as dramatic as the Midwest, but the summer sun bakes crown concrete until it expands and contracts daily, and that repeated stress opens hairline cracks that snowball.

Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield crowns are manufactured to fit their full line of prefabricated and masonry chimney systems, and the critical measurement is the outside dimension of your top flue tile or chase cover. We work with Copperfield’s standard 13″ x 13″, 13″ x 18″, and 17″ x 17″ crown forms most often in Las Vegas homes, but we also field-cut custom crowns on site when a builder used a nonstandard chase dimension. The quickest way to identify your specific crown before calling is to measure the concrete slab from edge to edge (not the flue opening inside it, but the full cap that sits on the top course of brick or chase). Write that number down. It shortens the job by about twenty minutes when you call us.

We carry OEM Copperfield crown forms and the correct refractory cement blend that matches their spec, but honestly, for crowns specifically, a well-made aftermarket replacement from a reputable foundry is functionally identical to the Copperfield-branded version. Where we insist on OEM or brand-approved materials is anything that touches the flue path itself (liners, connectors, damper assemblies). A crown is a water-shedding slab, and the material spec matters more than the sticker on the box. We’ll show you both options and the price difference before you decide.

Signs Your Copperfield Crown Repair Is Failing

  • Visible cracks in the concrete itself. Hairline cracks today become quarter-inch channels in two summers of Las Vegas heat. When water sits in those cracks overnight and the temperature drops below freezing a couple of times a winter, the ice expands and wedges them open further. That’s how a $200 patch becomes a $900 rebuild.
  • Efflorescence on the brick below the crown. That white, chalky deposit on the upper courses of brick is dissolved minerals left behind when water evaporates. It means water is soaking through the crown and down through the masonry, not running off the outside edge like it should.
  • Spalling brick or flaking mortar near the top of the chimney. When brick faces pop off or mortar joints crumble within the top three or four rows, the crown has been leaking for a while. The brick near the top is the first thing water hits after it migrates through a broken crown, and it fails before the damage works its way down to the firebox.
  • Water in the firebox after heavy rain. A few drops occasionally is normal. Standing water or a persistently damp firebox after a storm isn’t. That’s water finding a path through the crown, then running down the inside of the chimney and collecting where you can see it.
  • A crown that’s cracked around the flue tile but not at the edges. This is the classic Las Vegas failure, and it’s the one most homeowners miss. The concrete around the flue tile is the thinnest part of the crown, and it’s where expansion stress concentrates. If you can fit a quarter into the gap between your flue tile and the surrounding concrete, the crown is done.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Las Vegas homes, here’s the honest math on Copperfield crown work:

  • Minor crack filling and crown sealing: $250 – $450. We grind the crack, fill it with a flexible crown sealant rated for chimney use, and apply a waterproofing membrane over the entire crown surface. Best case. We’ll tell you plainly if this is all you need.
  • Partial resurfacing with new mortar bed: $450 – $750. This is the most common job: the crown is structurally sound but heavily cracked, so we build it back up with fresh crown mortar, tool it to the proper slope, and treat it. Takes most of a day.
  • Full crown replacement (poured concrete or precast Copperfield form): $750 – $950 installed. We remove the old crown entirely, set the new form with the correct overhang (minimum 2 inches past the chimney face so water drips free, not down the brick), and seal it.

Whatever the scope, you get the same thing every time: a written price before we bring a single tool off the truck, photos of the crown before and after, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise on the work. If the crown fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. No fine print beyond that sentence.

What drives the price in Las Vegas specifically?

Roof access and chimney height matter more than crown size. A one-story home in Henderson with a walkable roof pitch is the low end of every range above. A two-story Summerlin house with a steep roofline and a chimney that requires scaffold setup lands at the high end. We’ll measure and give you a flat price when we quote, so the number you approve is the number on your invoice. You can pay it from a link on your phone before we even load up the ladders.

DIY or Call Us?

If you can safely get on your roof, you can absolutely do the diagnosis yourself. Take photos of the crown in good morning light, shoot straight down onto it, and send them to us. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s a seal job or a rebuild, and we’ll give you a ballpark before we schedule anything.

Where DIY goes wrong on a crown is the repair itself. Crown sealant isn’t caulk from Home Depot, and masonry crown mortar has to be mixed to a specific consistency and tooled with a slope of at least one inch per foot to shed water correctly. Every flat crown we see in Las Vegas was someone’s weekend project. A flat crown holds water, water seeps into the brick, and the freeze-thaw cycle I described earlier starts working the moment the temperature drops. If the crown is cracked enough to think about this page at all, call us at (725) 600-0308, and we’ll get you a straight answer.
