Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Olympia Chimney Crown Repair: The Las Vegas Owner’s Guide
If you have an Olympia Chimney system and the concrete crown on top of your chimney is cracked, spalling, or pulling away from the flue, we repair and replace those crowns in Las Vegas every week. Installed Olympia-compatible crown repair typically runs $450 to $1,200 depending on crown size, damage extent, and whether we’re doing a full tear-out or a resurfacing with a bonded repair compound. Most Las Vegas homeowners discover the problem the same way: a water stain on the ceiling near the fireplace, or a roof inspection that flags a cracked crown and asks the question you’re now trying to answer.
Which Olympia Chimney Models This Applies To
The crown we’re talking about isn’t an Olympia-specific part like a damper or anchor plate. It’s the concrete or mortar cap that sits at the very top of the chimney, sealing the gap between the flue tile and the outer brick or stone. That said, the crown’s dimensions and condition depend heavily on which Olympia Chimney system the home was built with. Homes with Olympia’s stainless steel chimney systems (common in Las Vegas condos and newer builds from the mid-1990s onward) typically have a factory chase top with a formed crown assembly that can crack at the bolt points. Masonry fireplaces that use Olympia’s older refractory panel systems usually have a poured concrete crown that fails along the flue tile joints.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners hit: the flue tile diameter dictates the crown span, and Olympia systems in this market run from 6-inch round liners on prefab units up to 13×13 square clay tiles on masonry setups. Before we ever touch a crown, we measure the flue opening and the crown overhang, because a crown that doesn’t overhang the brick by at least two inches will never shed water properly, no matter how good the repair compound is. On the OEM versus aftermarket question, Olympia doesn’t sell a branded “crown kit” for masonry chimneys. Crowns are built on-site with mortar, concrete, or a polymer-modified repair compound like Gelco’s crown sealer. What matters is the mix and the slope, not a part number.

Signs Your Olympia Chimney Crown Repair Is Failing
- Hairline cracks radiating from the flue tile. This is the classic first failure. Thermal expansion in Las Vegas, where rooftop temps swing 50+ degrees between day and night, opens micro-cracks that freeze (yes, it freezes here occasionally) and widen each winter.
- Spalling concrete or flaking surface. When water soaks into the crown and evaporates, it carries minerals out. You’ll see a rough, pitted surface or small chunks missing from the crown edge.
- White efflorescence staining on the brick below the crown. That white haze is dissolved salts migrating through the masonry. It means water is moving through the crown into the chimney structure itself.
- A gap between the flue tile and the surrounding crown. This is the one that causes the most expensive damage. Once the seal around the flue tile fails, water runs straight down inside the chimney chase, rotting framing and rusting the damper assembly.
- Water in the firebox after rain. If you see puddling or damp ash after a Vegas downpour, the crown or the flashing above it is the prime suspect, and an Olympia system with a chase top can hide this for months before you notice.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Full crown tear-out and repour on a standard single-flue Olympia masonry chimney in Las Vegas runs $650 to $1,200 installed. If the crown is intact but showing early cracking, a bonded crown resurfacing with a flexible sealant (we use Gelco’s crown repair system) runs $450 to $700. The range depends on roof access, crown square footage, and whether we need to demolish the old crown down to sound concrete or can go over it. Every quote includes the demolition and disposal, new crown mix with proper slope and drip edge, a water-repellent treatment, and a written price before we start. That labor is backed by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within a year, the second visit is free.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely inspect your own crown from a ladder (as long as you’re not working against the roofline on a steep pitch), and we encourage you to do exactly that. Take photos, note the crack patterns, and look at whether the crown slopes away from the flue. What you shouldn’t do is mix and trowel a repair compound on a Las Vegas roof in July unless you know how crowning mixes cure in 110-degree heat, because they set too fast and the patch fails in months. The bigger risk is structural: a homeowner can’t tell whether the flue tile itself has separated below the crown, and that’s the scenario where a cosmetic patch hides a real fire hazard. Cory Mitchell has spent years on Vegas roofs looking at crowns that were “fixed” with a bucket of hardware store caulk, and the repair usually costs more by the time we see it. If you want a professional eye first, call (725) 600-0308 and we’ll take photos you can see for yourself before any price is discussed.
FAQs
A properly poured crown with a bonded sealant typically lasts 15 to 20 years in the Las Vegas climate, though crowns that see direct southern exposure on dark-colored chimneys can fail in 8 to 10 years. The UV load here breaks down crown sealants faster than in most markets, which is why we recommend a water-repellent reapplication every 3 to 4 years as part of any sweep visit. Call (725) 600-0308 if you’re unsure whether your crown needs a full repour or just a fresh sealant coat.
Yes, if the cracking is hairline and the crown surface is still solid, a bonded overlay repair is usually the right call and runs less than a full replacement. If the crown has separated at the flue tile or the concrete crumbles when probed, a patch job will fail within a season or two. The only way to know for certain is to look at close-up photos, which we’ll send you before quoting anything.
Most Olympia crown repairs take one full visit, 2 to 4 hours on the roof, with a second visit a few days later to apply the water-repellent topcoat if the repair compound needs cure time. Full tear-outs that require demolition and repouring can push the first visit to 5 or 6 hours. We book a specific arrival window and you’ll see live tracking on the day of, so nobody is waiting through a four-hour guess.
We stock crown repair compounds, flexible sealants, and water repellents on every truck, including Gelco crown sealer and the concrete mixes we use for full repours. We also work with DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Copperfield materials when a crown job uncovers a flue liner or firebox repair underneath. We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with Olympia Chimney, but we’ve repaired Olympia system crowns across Las Vegas for over two decades.
