Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Flue Liner Replacement: The Las Vegas Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Gelco-compatible flue liner replacement in Las Vegas, with most residential swaps running $1,800 to $3,400 installed depending on liner length, diameter, and roof access. If you’ve got a Gelco liner that’s cracked, corroded, or delaminating, we can usually get it replaced within a few days of your initial inspection. Most Las Vegas homeowners discover the problem the hard way: a chimney inspection for an unrelated issue, water stains on the ceiling near the chase, or the smell of smoke backing up into the house when the fireplace runs. The liner is the stainless steel or aluminum tube that carries combustion gases from your firebox up and out of the home, and when it fails, it stops doing that job silently and gradually.

Gelco made a lot of liners that went into Las Vegas homes built in the 1990s and early 2000s, particularly the Gelco 3000 and Gelco UltraPro series. What we see most often on those older units isn’t a sudden fracture; it’s slow corrosion at the seam welds and breakdown of the insulation wrap, especially in chases that see big temperature swings between our cold desert nights and hot afternoons. Cory Mitchell, our owner, put it best on a recent job in Henderson: “I’d rather show you the photo and explain it straight than leave you guessing what’s going on up there.” That’s how we handle every Gelco liner inspection.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco’s flue liners went by a few different series names depending on the year, and the naming isn’t always obvious from the outside of the unit. The two we see most in Las Vegas are the Gelco 3000 series, which used a corrugated stainless inner wall with an aluminum outer wall in some configurations, and the Gelco UltraPro, a flexible liner sold to contractors for masonry chimney relining jobs. If you have the original paperwork, look for a line marked “Model” or “Series.” If not, the diameter is what matters: Gelco liners in this market typically run 5.5″, 6″, or 7″ inside diameter for standard fireplaces, and matching that measurement is non-negotiable because a liner that’s even a half-inch off won’t seat correctly at the flue collar.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that catches people: Gelco’s twist-lock sections from the 3000 series do not interchange with the UltraPro’s clamp-and-rivet connections, even if both measure 6″. We identify what you have before quoting anything. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question, Gelco no longer maintains the consumer distribution channels it once did, so we source either genuine Gelco stock when it’s available through our supply network or spec-matched stainless replacement liners from DuraFlex, which cross-reference to the original Gelco dimensions. Both options get you a liner that meets the same UL 1777 standard for chimney liners. We’ll tell you which route makes sense for your specific year and model before you pay a dollar.

We’re an independent Las Vegas service company, not affiliated with Gelco, and we carry Gelco-compatible replacement parts alongside liners from DuraFlex and HeatShield. That independence matters because we have no reason to push one brand over another; we match what fits, what’s available, and what holds up in our climate.

Signs Your Gelco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing

These are the five symptoms we see most often on Gelco liners in Las Vegas homes, ranked by how frequently we encounter them:

  • Smoke smell in the house after the fire’s out. Small cracks or separated seams let combustion gases leak into the chimney chase instead of exiting through the top. That smell lingers in the living room and is easy to dismiss as “normal fireplace smell,” but a healthy liner doesn’t leave smoke behind.
  • White or chalky deposits on the outside of the chimney or inside the firebox. When the liner’s insulation wrap breaks down, moisture from combustion condenses inside the chase and leaches through masonry or siding. In Las Vegas, this shows up as efflorescence, the white mineral staining you might see on brick veneer near the roofline.
  • Water stains on the ceiling directly above or behind the fireplace. A compromised liner lets condensation collect in the chase, and that water finds its way through framing. This one’s counterintuitive because people assume the roof flashing failed, but if the roof is new and the stain persists, the liner is usually the culprit.
  • Visible rust streaks or pitting on the liner when you look down the flue with a flashlight. Most Las Vegas homeowners can’t safely inspect their own liner in full, but if you can see rust from the roof opening or through the damper, the corrosion has already progressed past the surface. Gelco liners from the late 90s are especially prone to weld-seam rust because of the alloy spec used at the time.
  • Debris or flaking material falling into the firebox. That’s pieces of the liner delaminating from its inner wall. Not just a cosmetic problem; those flakes mean the structural integrity is gone, and continuing to burn with a delaminated liner puts exhaust gases in places they should never be.

One safety note up front, and I want to be straight about it: carbon monoxide can move through gaps in a failed liner and into your living space, and it doesn’t smell like anything. If you’re seeing any combination of the symptoms above, stop running the fireplace until we’ve had a look. I’d also caution that while you can spot symptoms, the liner itself sits inside the chimney and is not a safe DIY repair job for a homeowner. This is confined-space work with fire-risk and carbon monoxide consequences if done wrong.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Las Vegas, a complete Gelco flue liner replacement runs between $1,800 and $3,400 for most single-story homes, installed. That range covers removal of the old liner, supply of the new stainless liner (Gelco-compatible or a DuraFlex cross-reference), installation, and a camera scan before we call the job done so you see with your own eyes that the new liner seats correctly along its full length.

What drives the price up or down:

  • Liner length. A two-story home with a tall chase needs more linear feet of stainless, and that’s the single biggest cost variable. A short one-story in Summerlin runs on the lower end; a tall two-story in a hillside lot runs higher.
  • Roof access and pitch. Steeper roofs or chases with limited flat workspace require more rigging and safety setup, and that adds labor hours, not just material cost. We’ll photograph the access situation during the estimate so you understand the number.
  • Diameter. Odd-sized Gelco units (some older 5.5″ or 7″ systems) sometimes require a special-order liner that costs more than the common 6″. We check this early so there are no surprises.
  • Existing damage to the chase or crown. If water has been getting in around the liner for years, the masonry crown or chase top may need attention as part of the same job. We quote that separately, with photos, and it’s never added without your sign-off.

Every replacement we do carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if the liner or our installation fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s not a verbal commitment; it’s on the estimate and the invoice. You’ll also get a digital invoice you can pay from your phone, plus before-and-after photos of the entire job, which is our standard on every visit under the Relay Visibility Guarantee.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a narrow slice of this job that’s safe for an owner, and a much larger slice that isn’t. What you can safely do: check the visible liner from the firebox with a flashlight, look for water stains and rust streaks, and document what you see. What you shouldn’t do: attempt to remove or replace any part of the liner yourself. This is not a bolt-on part that slides out with a screwdriver. The liner is secured through the firebox, often runs 20 to 40 feet through the chimney, and in older Gelco installations may be held by clamps that have corroded shut. Improper removal can send liner sections falling through the chase, damaging the firebox or the masonry around it.

If a failed liner repair goes wrong, you’ll also be left with carbon monoxide as a possibility, and that’s not a risk worth taking to save a few hundred dollars. The honest math is that the tools alone for this job cost more than our labor to do it safely. If you’re in Las Vegas and suspect your Gelco liner has failed, call us at (725) 600-0308. We’ll show you the camera footage, explain what you’re looking at in plain words, and put a written price in front of you before any work begins.
